OBJECTS AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[006] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide leak-resistant zippers for containers that can be opened and closed many times, where, when the zipper is closed, it is leak-resistant.
[007] It is therefore another object of the present invention to provide a leak resistant zipper, which typically reduces or eliminates the need for a gap or cut within a portion of the zipper to accommodate the separation devices when the zipper is in a closed configuration.
[008] These and other objects are achieved by a zipper, where, when the zipper is applied to a bag and the slider is adjacent to or is in contact with the seal at the closing end of the zipper or zipper bag, a barrier is created by the inner and outer parts of the zipper bag.
[009] The zipper typically includes end seals, at the opening and closing ends of the zipper, an upper and a lower set of locking elements, a first and second upper flanges above the upper locking elements having no gaps or cuts therein, and a first and second lower flange below the locking elements, with the second flange pressed into its set of locking elements, and a slider. [026] With reference to the detailed description, in which like numbers indicate similar elements throughout the various views, it can be noted that Figure 1 is a diagram of a multi-use package 100, typically formed with polymeric front and back walls 102, 104, a side opening seal 106, a side closing end seal 108, a bottom fold or seal 110, and a mouth 112 which can be closed with a zipper 10, including a slider 12 with the opening end 12A and the closing end 12B.
[027] Although a wide range of zippers 10 are secured in a multi-purpose package, as shown in Figure 1, can be used in the present invention, representative zippers are illustrated in the various figures. Figure 2 illustrates a double zipper embodiment with first and second zipper profiles 14, 16 ending upwards at respective first and second upper flanges 15, 17 and ending downward at first and second lower flanges 19, 21. The first and second flanges 19, 21. top flanges 15, 17 are typically free of gaps or cuts. The first zipper profile 14 includes first and second female locking elements 18, 20 formed by arcuate extending arms 22, terminated in detent hooks 24, thereby forming volumes to receive respective first and second male locking elements 26 , 28 of the second zipper profile 16. The first and second male elements 26, 28 include respective first and second axes 30, 32 ending in respective first and second arrowhead detent elements 34, 36. In that illustrated embodiment, the elements Arrowhead detents 34, 36 are enlarged on the undersides, thereby reducing the opening force required on the consumer side and increasing the opening force required on the product side. Additionally, the second zipper profile 16 includes a hinge structure 38, formed by an inner flange 40, from which the first and second male members 26, 28 extend, and an outer flange 42, which joins a pivot point 44 descendingly adjacent from the top surface of the second zipper profile 16.
[028] Figure 3 is similar to Figure 2, except that the second female locking element 20 is replaced with a first arm 48 with a snap-on hook (in that it can be joined with a similar or identical structure) and a guide stop 50, and a second male locking element is replaced with a second arm 52, with a snap hook. Figure 4 illustrates a zipper 10, with a first zipper profile 14 with male elements 26', 28' and a second zipper profile 16 with male elements 26, 28.
[029] Figure 5 illustrates a zipper 10 with a first zipper profile 14, with two snap hooks 54, 56 engaging the two snap hooks 56, 60 of the second zipper profile 16. Similar to Figure 2, this one The figure illustrates a hinge structure 38, formed by an outer flange 42, joining a pivot point 44 downwardly adjacent to the second upper flange 17. Figures 6 and 7 illustrate a slider 12 formed from the upper wall 202 of the first and second side walls 204, 206 and the first and second inwardly facing slide retainer ribs 209, 211, forming an opening 210 through which the lower flanges (pressed and unpressed) of the zipper extend. Figure 6 further illustrates slider 12 coupling the first and second upper flanges 15, 17 of the zipper 10 of Figure 6 into respective first and second divergent wedge channels 212, 214 (thereby forming the separating wedge 213 therebetween) , formed at the ends of the inner portion of the top wall 202, to separate the first and second zipper profiles 14, 16. Figure 8 further illustrates the zipper of Figure 5 in a closed configuration with the undersides of the first and second zipper profiles 14, 16, pushed together, as can be done by slider 12. Figure 9 illustrates a zipper 10 similar to that of Figure 5, except that a lip seal 62 has been added between the first and second lower flanges 19, 21 of the first and second zipper profiles 12, 14. In other words, the first and second lower flanges 19, 21 compress together to form a lip seal 62 approximately below the locking elements 20, 28, and acre of rim 62 extends only the length of slider 12 when slider 12 contacts the seal at the closure end of zipper bag 108.
[030] Figures 6A and 10 illustrate a similar embodiment as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, except that the first and second inwardly extending thickened protrusions 64, 66 have been added to the first and second lower flanges 19, 21 of the first and second profiles of zippers 14, 16, in a position in which they pass through the opening 210 in the bottom wall 208 of the runner 12, between the first and second inwardly facing runner retaining ribs 209, 211.
[031] Figures 6B and 11 illustrate a similar embodiment as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, except that the lower inner flange 40' is added to the inner locking element of the second zipper profile 16. This lower inner flange 40' is tensioned to provide the same effect as the first and second inwardly extending thickened protuberances 64, 66 of Figures 6A and 10, when captured between the inwardly facing slide retainer ribs 209, 211. This lower inner flange 40' may also be sealed to the first lower flange 19 by a seal, but only for the length of the slider, when the slider is at the closing end of zipper 12. A variation on this alternative would be to make the lower inner flange 40' a little longer, endow it with a self-adhesive seal, seal it self-adheringly along the entire length of the flange 19. This would also provide a zipper item with evidence of tampering. When zipper 10 is unzipped, the self-adhering seal with evidence of tampering will separate, but stay close to the closure end for the length of the slider. A handle seal can be used as an alternative to a self-adherent seal. Simultaneously with the formation of the self-adhesive seal or handle seal, the indicated area adjacent to the slider 12 may also be entirely sealed.
[032] Figures 12 and 13A illustrate the embodiments with a single track zipper. Figure 13A illustrates an embodiment in which the length of the lower flange has been reduced, requiring the zipper to be sealed to the film of a bag or package by its base rather than its flange, while Figure 12 illustrates an embodiment in which the tamper evidence strip 68 extends from below the female locking element 18 of the first zipper profile 14 and is joined to the second zipper profile 16 by a seal 62, which may be formed as a self-adhering seal or a seal similar to options described with respect to the 40' lower inner flange of Figures 6B and 11.
[033] Figure 13 illustrates an embodiment in which double track zippers are employed, in which the lower track, formed by the locking elements 20, 28, is sealed, and the seal only extends the length of the slider 12, when the slider 12 is adjacent to the seal on the closing side 108.
[034] Figure 14 illustrates an embodiment in which the upper flanges 15, 17 have protrusions 15', 17' or ribs with cut sections and/or first and second channels 212, 214 forming the slider wedge, which may include conical fountains 230, 232, cavities, ribs or other undulations or irregularities to generate audible feedback, such as a click, as the slider 12 is moved.
[035] Figure 15 illustrates an embodiment of a zipper 10 similar to that of Figure 5, but with a tamper evidence strip 68, similar to that of Figure 6B. In this embodiment, the articulation is incorporated to eliminate the need for a wishbone design in a larger high capacity bag. By adding the tamper evidence strip 68, extending from the lower locking element of the second zipper profile 16 (which is hinged) and secured to the first zipper profile 14 by the self-adhering seal 62, the full width of the zipper 12, of the top part of the profile to the bottom part of the flange, can be reduced. Figure 15 further depicts an embodiment of the slider 12.
[036] Typically, in the various embodiments described, on the end side seals 106, 108 of the bag 10, the flanges and the locking elements of the zipper, including any hinged part, are fused together. Therefore, at a location directly adjacent to the end side seals 106, 108, the slider separating wedge 213 (at the slider opening end 12A) is not able to force the lower locking elements 20, 28 (see Figure 2 or similar) separately. At the opposite or closing end 12B of the slider 12, the primary or higher locking elements 18, 26 (see Figure 2) and the secondary or lower locking elements 20, 28 are held in a configuration locked by the slider 12. By virtue of of two opposite ends of the slider 12 (in which the locking elements are constrained and held together by the closing end of the slider 12 or by the side end seals 106, 108 of the bag 10), a part of the primary or upper locking elements 18 , 26 will be forced open by the slider separating wedge 213, but the secondary or lower locking element 28 of the second zipper profile 16 (which, in Figure 2, includes a hinge) will be held in engagement with the locking element. secondary or lower locking 20 of the first zipper profile 14, thereby maintaining a leak-resistant seal. Alternatively, when the lower locking elements are not held in engagement, other elements need to be provided to obtain a leak resistant seal in the area of the uncoupled lower locking elements.
[037] When the slider 12 is moved from the fully closed position, illustrated in Figure 1, there are no longer any restrictions acting on the zipper 10, between the opening end 12A of the slider 12 and adjacent to the opening end side seal 106 of that thereby allowing both the first and second elements 26, 28 to be forced apart from the first and second female elements 18, 20 by the spacer member 219 and the spacer wedge 213 of Figure 7 at the opening end 12A of the slider 12.
[038] Therefore, when the slider 12 is moved in the opening direction, the first and second upper flanges 15, 17 are forced apart by the divergent wedge channels 212, 214 of the slider 12, thereby fully separating both sets of locking elements, except for the length of the slider 12, when the slider 12 is adjacent to or in contact with the opening end zipper or end seal of the zipper bag 106. Therefore, when the locking elements are separated, it is quite clear for the consumer that the zipper 12 is open. When the slider 12 is moved in the closing direction, the closing end of the slider 12B is fully coupled with both sets of locking elements, except for the length of the slider 12, where the slider 12 is adjacent or in contact with the zipper. or seal the end of the zipper bag (next to the side closure seal 108).
[039] Within the slider 12, when the slider 12 is adjacent to or in contact with the zipper or end seal of the zipper bag 106 or 108, the pressed lower flange is compressed inwardly by the inwardly facing slider retaining ribs 209, 211, which keeps the lower locking elements 20, 28 locked, while the wedge 213, acting on the upper flanges 15, 17, keeps the upper locking elements 18, 26 in a separate configuration.
[040] Consequently, when the slider 12 is adjacent to or in contact with the end seal of the zipper bag (near the side seal 106 or 108), a barrier is formed within the slider 12, between the inner and outer parts of the bag of zipper 100, which zipper 10 has been attached, whose limits are the locked lower locking elements (L) and both of the locking elements locked at the closing end of slider 12B (also marked M), as shown in Figure 1.
[041] The dimensions of the width of the 213 wedge should be carefully considered. The width of the wedge 213 typically has to be wide enough to lie within the confines of the slider 12, to fully separate the upper locking elements 18, 26, but together with the pressed lower flange, maintain the lower locking elements 20 , 28 locked (see Figure 6). Similarly, the width of the wedge 213, if too narrow, will not separate the upper locking elements 18, 26. Typically, to obtain the results mentioned above, the width of the wedge (G in Figure 7) should be in the range of 2.5 to 3.5 times the size of the locking elements, when locked, measured from one outer surface to another outer surface (J in Figure 8).
[042] The opening end 12A of the slider 12 typically forms a rectangular shape between the upper surfaces of the inwardly facing slider retaining ribs 209, 211, the lower surface of the wedge 213 and the inside of the side walls 204, 206 , wherein the width of the opening end 12A of the slider 12 between the inner portions of the sides of the slider 12 is greater than the height of the opening end between the lower surface of the wedge 213 and the upper surface of the slider retaining ribs. inward facing 209, 211, which is generally the opposite of much of the prior art. Furthermore, both sections of the upper locking elements 18, 26 are in contact with the lower surface of the wedge 213.
[043] When placing or inserting the slider 12 into the zipper 10, it is typically necessary to first separate the first and second upper flanges 15, 17, to allow the slider wedge 213 to be inserted between them. This requires a small separating member 219 below the wedge 213, as shown in Figure 7. This member 219 is positioned above the locking elements. This member 219 is structured to prevent the top flanges 15, 17 from interfering with the insertion of slider 12 into zipper 10.
[044] It is considered that the thickness of the top wall or bridge 202, above the upper zipper flanges (K in Figure 7), should typically be between 1.02 and 1.40 centimeters (0.40 and 0, 55 inch). Above 1.40 centimeters (0.55 inches), slider 12 may be too rigid to be inserted into zipper 10 (ie, above 1.40 centimeters - 0.55 inches - there is not enough flexibility for it to sides of slider 204, 206 separate) and below 1.02 centimeters (0.40 inches), sides of slider 204, 206 will typically not return to their original positions, and will instead remain at part and slider 12 will not stay on zipper 10.
[045] As previously indicated, other combinations of alternative leak resistant barriers can be provided by other illustrated embodiments, in which both sets of locking elements are separated within the slider. For example, in Figure 9, the seal 62 is provided between the first and second lower flanges 19, 21 approximately below the locking elements, where the seal 62 extends only the length of the runner 12, to a position in which the runner 12 is in contact with the closure end side seal 108. Similarly, as shown in Figures 6A and 10, the first and second inwardly extending thickened protrusions 64, 66, in the area of the inwardly facing slider retaining ribs 209 , 211, provide leak resistance. Similarly, as shown in Figures 6B and 11, the lower inner flange 40' provides the same function as that of the inwardly thickened protrusions 64, 66 of Figures 6A and 10. This lower inner flange 40' can be sealed to the first flange. bottom 19, thereby providing resistance to leakage, but only for the length of the slider 12 when the slider is at the closing end of the zipper. As mentioned above, a variation of this alternative would be to make the inner 40' lower flange a little longer, provide it with a self-adhering seal, and seal it with the full length of the zipper 10. This would also provide an item of zipper with evidence of tampering. When zipper 10 is opened, the self-adhering seal with evidence of tampering will separate, but will remain closed at the closure end for the length of the slider. A handle seal can be used as an alternative to a self-adherent seal. Simultaneously with the formation of the self-adhesive seal or handle seal, the area adjacent to the slider 12 can also be entirely sealed. This handle seal or self-adhering seal configuration will further allow the implementation of the single track configuration of Figure 12. Similarly, as described above and as shown in Figure 13, by sealing the lower track formed by the locking elements 20, 28 , along only the length of slider 12, when slider 12 is adjacent to side closure seal 108, the necessary leakage resistance will be provided while allowing separation of the remainder of the dual-thread zipper within slider 12.
[046] In this way, the various objects and advantages mentioned above are more effectively achieved. While preferred embodiments of the invention have been described in detail in the present specification, it is to be understood that this invention is in no way so limited, and its scope is to be determined by that of the appended claims.
